Our Origins |

It all began in June 1974 when Frank and his business partner Bill opened their first shop in Ilford, Essex. They had both previously been employed by Dewhurst and seeing a gap in the market for a traditional quality butcher had taken the decision to go out on their own. | ||||
|
Trading under the name of Ellis Mondey (Quality Butchers) the pair worked hard to grow their business. After only a few months, with the shop in Ilford prospering, shop number two was opened in Wood Green, London. This new store quickly became a success and over the following few years they continued to expand, opening a number of additional outlets in the surrounding area – including “The Meat Shop” in Waltham Cross, Herts from where we still trade today. | ||||

During the 1990’s the damage caused to the high streets by shoppers turning to out of town supermarkets to do their weekly shop became more and more apparent. Many of the butchers, bakers, greengrocers and other small traders found it impossible to survive. | ||||
|
It was during this time that Frank’s son, Lee joined the business full time. Having spent many weekends and holidays working in the shops, he soon developed his skills and this proved to be the start of a great father and son relationship which is still going strong today. | ||||

Today and Moving Forward |

The family run business has now moved into the 21st century with the help of some useful technology and the great working spirit of the team behind it all. Full time butchers Matt and Dan provide a youthful insight into the demands of the modern shopper. The duo are always keen to provide us with innovative ideas for creating new cuts and products. On the other hand, seasoned campaigners Nikki and Ray provide us with the skills and experience that only comes with age. | ||||
